Dicko's double clinches win

Chris Dickson scored twice as Charlton's reserves defeated Watford 3-0 at Boreham Wood on Monday night.

Chris Dickson netted twice for Charlton reserves on Monday nightJonjo Shelvey was also on target in the second match in the Addicks' totesportcasino.com Combination Cup Group B campaign.

And although Charlton have yet to taste victory in the second XI league competition this season, they are now well placed to progress in the new cup competition after recording a first reserve win of the season.

Despite fielding a young side, coach Mark Kinsella would have been pleased how Charlton dominated the match from the first whistle, with the central midfield combination of Shelvey and Rashid Yussuff particularly influential.

It was Shelvey who instigated the move that led to the opening goal after 36 minutes.

A 40-yard diagonal pass picked out winger Scott Wagstaff and, after the duo had exchanged passes, Shelvey drilled the ball across the box where Dickson pounced to knock the ball into the net.

It was 1-0 at half-time and although Rob Elliot in the Charlton goal was rarely troubled by the Hornets, he had to make a good save immediately after the break to preserve the visitors' lead.

It was 2-0 after 74 minutes and again Shelvey was the creator and Dickson the scorer; this time the striker leaping highest to nod the midfielder's corner into the net.

Dickson departed the action 10 minutes later having been unable to complete his hat-trick.

But that wasn't the end of the scoring as, three minutes into stoppage time, Shelvey pounced on an error by a Watford defender and drilled a left-footed shot into the net to conclude a comprehensive victory.
