Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo will undergo surgery on his injured right ankle in the next two to three days, according to Portuguese medical staff.
Portugal's team doctor told Sky Sports News that Ronaldo is expected to go under the knife at the weekend, but United are hopeful he will be fit in time for the start of the Premier League season on August 16.
The decision for Ronaldo to have surgery was taken following a meeting with officials from the Portuguese national team and Manchester United after the player's return to Portugal from a holiday in Italy.
Ronaldo's operation could scupper his hopes of a summer move to Real Madridbefore the transfer window closes on Aug 31.
The two-time footballer of the year is due to return to United for pre-season training on July 14, but Ronaldo insisted last night that he will continue to rest in Portugal before flying back to Manchester later this month.
He said: "I can only say that I will spend the period of my recovery in my house in Sintra, but regarding my future, I can't say anything."
