The 24-year-old former Ajax man moved to St. Andrew's on a free transfer from Spanish club Celta Vigo in July 2007, signing a three-year deal.
However the former Dutch Under 21 international found his chances somewhat limited last season.
De Ridder started just eight games for Blues during the 2007-08 campaign and made four appearances as a substitute.
Blues boss Alex McLeish said: "Unfortunately for De Ridder he didn't feature much last season but I wish him well.
"He is a good talent in terms of his ability but we are looking for something else a different type of player.
"Everybody has their own opinion but in order for me to move forward I'm going to have to make some sacrifices and he is one of those sacrifices.
"When players leave football clubs it's important to plug the gaps.
"I am continuing to work hard with the aim of strengthening our squad with quality players."
