Derby manager Paul Jewell claims Middlesbrough are also in the race to sign Swansea midfielder Ferrie Bodde.
The Dutchman is keen to leave the Swans after just one season with the club, but is valued at £2million by the League One champions.
Swansea have already rejected offers from Derby, although the two clubs are continuing to negotiate in the hope of reaching a deal.
However, Rams boss Jewell admits he could become embroiled in a battle with Premier League clubs for Bodde's signature after revealing Boro have shown an interest.
"I would imagine there's a few clubs in for Ferrie because he's a good player," Jewell told the Derby Evening Telegraph.
"So if West Brom are in for him, we've got to try and get over that hurdle. I know Middlesbrough were interested in him, so we're up against some decent competition, but we feel we've got a lot to offer here.
"We'd just like the opportunity to speak to the player.
"He's a terrific midfield player, was outstanding for Swansea last season, but our bid has been rejected by Swansea.
"The two chairman are speaking, trying to thrash a deal out and we're hopeful that we'll get permission to speak to him."
