Coyle focuses on younger talent

Manager Owen Coyle feels Burnley's emphasis on signing and developing younger players can only benefit the club in the long-term.

The Clarets have already completed the signings of striker Martin Paterson, 21, from Scunthorpe and Dundee's 19-year-old midfielder Kevin McDonald.

"I think we've got some terrific players at the football club," Coyle told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"But we needed to add some younger legs because of their hunger and desire."

McDonald's former boss at Dens Park, Alex Rae, has been quoted as saying the midfielder's agent should have pushed the player to sign for a bigger club.

But Coyle feels choosing a move to Turf Moor rather than West Brom or Crystal Palace shows how highly-regarded Burnley are becoming.

"I get on very well with Alex and I've not got a gripe with how people perceive things to be. But we've offered a transfer fee that was accepted by Dundee Football Club.

"The biggest thing in all of this is that Kevin and his parent's feel very comfortable about coming to Burnley and they feel it is the right move in his development.

"The deal itself does involve some incentives and if Kevin goes on to do very well, as we think he will, then Dundee will be rewarded in that as well."

And Coyle is convinced with the likes of 20-year-old Chris McCann and Jay Rodriguez, 18, already at the club, the future is looking bright.

"We want to identify with young players coming through because it goes with the history and the tradition of this football club."
