Peter Ridsdale has hinted that Cardiff City will make an improved offer for Rangers striker Kris Boyd.

The Bluebirds had an initial £2.5million bid knocked back last week, but remain hopeful of luring the Scottish international to Ninian Park.

It is thought that, if he were to leave Ibrox, Boyd would prefer a move to a Premier League side, though Cardiff have aspirations of making the step up to the top flight in the near future.

Whether their lofty ambitions prove to be enough to persuade the forward to make the journey south remains to be seen but the club have made it clear that he remains their top priority.

Fellow Scot, and potential striker partner at Cardiff, Steve Thompson has already urged Boyd to join him in Wales, although he did say the former Kilmarnock man should be aiming higher.

"We have both looked as Steve Thompson's comments and there is nothing in them telling Kris Boyd not to come to Cardiff City," Ridsdale told the South Wales Echo.

"I'd prefer it if nothing had been said, but Steve's quotes say Boyd is a great striker who ought to be in the Premiership.

"That's why we're trying to sign Boyd."

Ridsdale was responding to claims that Thompson had down played the club when discussing a potential move for Boyd, but the striker insists that was not the case and he is confident that the Bluebirds will be pushing hard for promotion next season.

"If I was Boydy I would be looking more at the Premiership and that's only if he wants to go," said Thompson.

"You just have to take one look at his scoring record to realise it's quite unbelievable.

"But that doesn't mean I would rule out Cardiff. I don't know Boydy all that well, but he came down to Cardiff a few seasons ago and, apparently, almost signed. He should come down and take another look - the facilities now are light years away from what they were."
